the axeman's carnival

The Axeman's Carnival is a brilliant novel by Catherine Chidgey. I Illustrated and designed the cover in 2022 working with the author and publishers to capture the essence of the book. The cover has gold foil detailing as well as a wrap-around illustration of the high country in Central Otago and hand-drawn typography. The magpie on the cover is the mischievous main character Tama the talking magpie.

The Axeman's Carnival won the 2023 Ockham NZ Book Awards Ann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction.
